Charlotte, North Carolina (25 January 2016) – Heading to the World Center of Racing to open the next chapter in the team’s history, Change Racing will look to make a strong start to the 2016 IMSA WeatherTech SportsCar Championship this weekend at Daytona International Speedway.
Having raced to five Lamborghini Super Trofeo Championships in IMSA competition, Change Racing will grow in 2016 as the team steps up to the IMSA WeatherTech level with a full season campaign in the GTD class.
The Charlotte-based organization will take to the 11-round championship armed with the exciting new GT3 offering from Lamborghini, the No. 16 Change Racing Huracán.
The effort will see Change Racing full-time pilots Spencer Pumpelly and Monster Energy Drink Athlete Corey Lewis pair with Justin Marks and Kaz Grala for the twice-around the clock classic, which will take the green flag at 2:40 PM ET on Saturday (live coverage on FS1 starts at 2:00 PM). A productive test earlier this month has the team prepared for a very competitive 24 hours of racing.
History and the record books have long attested to the fact that the key to a winning equation at Daytona lies in a strong lineup of driver, and Change Racing has just that.
2009 Rolex 24 At Daytona GT Class winner Marks and 2006 and 2011 GT Class winner Pumpelly bring winning experience, while Lewis is fresh off of a world Championship in Lamborghini Super Trofeo competition with Change Racing.
At just 17 years old, Grala is the youngest driver entered in the 2016 Rolex 24, but what he is lacking in years he does not lack in speed or race experience. The Rolex 24 is his first start, but the young Boston-based NASCAR K&N East pilot has one race under his belts on the 3.56-mile circuit, having raced to fourth in the IMSA Continental Tire SportsCar Challenge Series in 2014.
“There is a lot of preparation that goes into making our first start at this level, and to have that first race be the Rolex 24, it is a very big challenge,” said team principal Robby Benton. “But we’ve been doing our homework, and just have our heads down and are working hard to have all the pieces in place to be successful. We’ve got a lot of optimism about this Lamborghini Huracán, a very good crew to support the car, and a great driver roster. It is a big challenge, but it is also one that everyone on this team is very excited about.”
The team has just four practices to put the final touches on their No. 16 Change Racing Huracán ahead of the green flag on Saturday the 30th at 2:40 PM ET.
